Signs your child may need braces

As a parent, it’s natural to want the very best for your child’s health and confidence - including their smile. But how can you tell if they might need braces? At Braces N Faces Orthodontics, we often see families unsure about whether it’s “too early” or if they should just wait and see. The truth is, recognising the early signs can make all the difference.
Here’s what to look for - and how our team can help guide you through your child’s orthodontic journey with personalised, expert care.
Why early assessment matters?
The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up by the age of 7. Why? Because early assessment doesn’t always mean early treatment - but it does allow us to spot potential problems while your child’s teeth and jaws are still developing.
At Braces N Faces, we offer free initial consultations to help you get clarity - no pressure, just expert advice.
Common signs your child may need braces
Every child is different, but here are some of the most common indicators that orthodontic treatment might be needed:
1. Crowded or crooked teeth
If your child’s teeth overlap, twist, or seem misaligned, it may be a sign that there’s not enough space in their mouth for permanent teeth to grow properly.
2. Gaps between teeth
Spacing issues can be just as important as crowding. Large gaps may affect bite and tooth development, especially if baby teeth fall out too early.
3. Overbite or underbite
If your child’s upper teeth stick out far over the lower ones (overbite), or their lower jaw juts out (underbite), it can lead to long-term bite issues and wear on teeth.
4. Mouth breathing
Chronic mouth breathing can affect jaw development and facial growth. We work closely with other specialists if needed to address this holistically.
5. Thumb sucking or dummy use beyond age 4
Prolonged thumb or dummy habits can shift the position of your child’s teeth and jaw, sometimes resulting in an open bite or speech concerns.
6. Early or late loss of baby teeth
If baby teeth fall out too early (or hang around longer than expected), it can disrupt the natural eruption of adult teeth, causing misalignment.
7. Speech difficulties or chewing issues
Struggling with certain words or chewing can indicate an underlying bite problem. Orthodontic treatment may help improve both function and comfort.
8. Jaw shifting, clicking, or pain
If your child’s jaw appears to shift to one side when talking or chewing - or if they complain of clicking or discomfort - it’s a good reason to book an assessment.
What treatment options are available for kids?
At Braces N Faces, we believe in tailoring treatment to your child’s unique needs, lifestyle, and comfort. If your child does need braces or early intervention, we’ll walk you through every step.
- Traditional metal braces: Still a popular and effective option for younger patients, especially for more complex cases.
- Clear ceramic braces: A more discreet option for children and teens who want a less visible treatment.
- Invisalign® First (clear aligners for kids): Designed specifically for growing smiles, Invisalign First is a clear, comfortable way to treat common issues in children aged 6–10. They're removable, easy to clean, and perfect for school-aged kids./li>
- Early interceptive treatment: In some cases, we may recommend early appliances like expanders or partial braces to guide jaw growth and prevent more complicated issues later on.
